Canary Global Foundation (CGF) supported the Local Volume Mapper (LVM) community through sponsorship of a scientific meeting held in Tenerife, bringing together researchers working on one of the most ambitious mapping efforts of the nearby universe.
The Local Volume Mapper, part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), is focused on creating detailed, spatially resolved maps of the interstellar medium across the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. The Tenerife meeting provided a platform for collaboration, coordination, and discussion of ongoing scientific and technical developments.
By supporting this convening, CGF contributes to strengthening connections between observational programs, data-intensive science, and international research communities — particularly in a region that plays a central role in global astronomical infrastructure.
This effort aligns with CGF’s broader mission to foster collaboration around operational observatories and emerging scientific initiatives, including those connected to next-generation surveys and follow-up capabilities.

Why this matters
Large-scale scientific discovery increasingly depends on coordination across institutions, datasets, and observing facilities. Convenings such as this enable the exchange of ideas, alignment of strategies, and development of collaborations that accelerate scientific progress.
What’s next
CGF will continue to support opportunities for scientific collaboration and convening in the Canary Islands, reinforcing the region’s role as a hub for international astronomy.
